I am writing to you to ask you to take a stand against malicious deepfakes.

Deepfakes are AI-generated voices, images or videos of an individual that are created without that person’s consent. They can be used to produce sexual abuse material, commit fraud and undermine democracy. They undermine truth, privacy, and personal safety by creating fake versions of us that are out of our control. 

Deepfake abuse online is out of control. The tech used to create them is becoming more common, more convincing, and easier to use. Last year, sexually explicit deepfakes online increased by over 450% and deepfake fraud rose by 3000%. Yet there is no legislation to stop deepfake creation.

We cannot leave those who create deepfakes unpunished. There must be a ban on generation, creation and distribution of malicious deepfakes. Legal liability must be placed on the companies that develop or provide deepfake technology, the creators of deepfakes, and those who spread and publish deepfakes. Without these measures, the damage will increase exponentially - with no end in sight.

I ask that you take action to protect all of us by pushing for a ban on the production and distribution of deepfakes.
